Underwriting & Actuarial Careers
Put our mission to work
Our underwriting and actuarial teams work within the Property/Casualty and Life/Health departments. Joining our teams could be a great way to use your analytical mind to help customers protect what matters most.
Underwriting career
State Farm® insures more cars and homes than any other company in the United States. We’re also the largest life insurer in the United States – having the most individual life policies in force.
Managing each of these policies means our Underwriters and Underwriting Service Assistants have the skills and knowledge they need to help customers protect their properties and lives.
Underwriters assess customer risks and determine insurance eligibility by reviewing applications, existing business, statistical data, reports, and customer information. Underwriting Service Assistants and Customer Service Assistants process policy changes, and collaborate with agents to serve customers.
Actuarial career
Our actuarial teams rely on decisive and resourceful problem solvers to provide analysis and insight that support business decisions. Actuarial careers offer challenging assignments and abundant developmental opportunities.
Having functions within both property & casualty and life & health insurance, our actuarial team employs a diverse skillset to stay ahead of an ever changing business climate by utilizing the latest programming languages.
Data mining, model building, and predictive modeling are among the work we execute in collaboration with other business areas across the enterprise.
Financial support and exam study time at work are also available to encourage successful pursuit of FCAS (Fellow, Casualty Actuarial Society) and FSA (Fellow, Society of Actuaries) designations.

So every time a customer calls in and asks to change something about their policy, whether it's the name on the policy or their mailing address, that's where we come in. Before I came to State Farm, I worked as a dental lab tech, which is totally different than what I'm doing now.

Thank you for calling the Business Lines Resource Center. This is Lorenzo. May I have your name and alias please? Before I came to State Farm, I was assistant general manager for a fast food restaurant. So the underwriter determines whether the insured is a risk for the company. The underwriting service assistant role actually helps gather that information before it's presented to the underwriter.

Training in the personal lines contact center was very intense. But in a great, positive way. We're able to have hands on with the computer and the systems. We're able to be just that much more efficient.
(IMAGE)
We see Lorenzo working at his desk. (Speaker: Lorenzo) When I came here, State Farm made sure that I got all the training that I needed to make sure I was ready to go.

(Speaker: Brenna)
So there's definitely a team aspect. If you don't process something right, it kind of hurts the rest of your team. And it hurts the customer too. So focusing on that is a big deal, getting things right the first time.

We see Lorenzo, and then we see him in a group with others in a lounge area.
(Speaker: Lorenzo)
So in huddles, our manager goes over our call information, how the company is doing. Upper leadership is very transparent with how State Farm is doing. And we really appreciate that a lot.

Before I come in to State Farm I was a title processor for a home refinance company. Part of the reason I came to State Farm is because of my family. I have an aunt, an uncle, a cousin and a brother that are all employees of State Farm. That tells me that State Farm's all about family.
