Introduction | Enterprise Technology | State Farm®
1
00:00:02,000 --> 00:00:05,000
In the normal consumer mind it’s like okay, insurance, you guys do insurance
2
00:00:05,001 --> 00:00:08,000
The biggest surprise was definitely the amount of technology.
3
00:00:08,001 --> 00:00:13,000
It kind of broke the idea of what it meant to be a corporate employee.
4
00:00:13,001 --> 00:00:17,000
Welcome. Welcome. Welcome to Enterprise Technology.
5
00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:23,000
State Farm very much so is a tech company and we embrace the tech culture
6
00:00:23,001 --> 00:00:25,000
and we thrive in that environment.
7
00:00:25,001 --> 00:00:30,000
Enterprise Technology really focuses on all of the technology aspects.
8
00:00:31,001 --> 00:00:35,000
I work in the digital experience area, customer-facing front end stuff,
9
00:00:35,001 --> 00:00:37,000
things that our customers will see.
10
00:00:37,001 --> 00:00:43,000
We are spearheading this effort that allows State Farm to grow and prosper and better service our policyholders.
11
00:00:43,001 --> 00:00:48,000
A lot of what I like about my role is that even though I’m not directly talking to customers,
12
00:00:48,001 --> 00:00:50,000
what I do really impacts them.
13
00:00:50,001 --> 00:00:55,000
You don’t have to leave such a great company to find new opportunities,
14
00:00:55,001 --> 00:00:57,000
and that’s probably one of the things I like the most.
15
00:00:57,001 --> 00:01:02,000
You can work in architecture, infrastructure, you can also work as a developer, Technology Analyst, Business Analyst.
16
00:01:02,001 --> 00:01:06,000
At State Farm here it’s huge. I mean you can do almost anything you want.
17
00:01:06,001 --> 00:01:08,000
It just depends on what you’re passionate about.
18
00:01:08,001 --> 00:01:13,000
People are willing to help you get to that role too, which is I think one of the biggest benefits of working here.
19
00:01:13,001 --> 00:01:17,000
I definitely feel like I’m empowered. I feel like I have a say in the product.
20
00:01:17,001 --> 00:01:20,000
It’s very hey, you got this, you go, you do your thing.
21
00:01:20,001 --> 00:01:24,000
I have the freedom to work the way I need to to get the job done.
22
00:01:24,001 --> 00:01:28,000
I can’t get bored at work. If I want to do something different, I can.
23
00:01:28,001 --> 00:01:31,000
If I want to learn more things, I can. And that’s what I love about State Farm.
24
00:01:31,001 --> 00:01:35,000
As we modernize and we look at better ways to service our customers,
25
00:01:35,001 --> 00:01:40,000
I believe that State Farm is doing very well to listen to developers and to get our input and our feedback.
26
00:01:40,001 --> 00:01:43,000
The quicker we can get new technologies, the quicker we can adapt to what the customer wants.
27
00:01:43,001 --> 00:01:46,000
I think that’s the most important thing.
28
00:01:46,001 --> 00:01:50,000
I know that I’m helping to make that better experience for our customers.
29
00:01:50,001 --> 00:01:53,000
The culture is just something different that you don’t see.
30
00:01:53,001 --> 00:01:56,000
Everyone is willing to help you anything. It’s more of a sense of a family.
31
00:01:56,001 --> 00:02:03,000
It’s a culture that really embraces and accepts you and wants you to be the best person you are.
Introduction | Information Security | State Farm®
1
00:00:02,000 --> 00:00:04,000
When I say I work at State Farm they're like
2
00:00:02,001 --> 00:00:06,000
Oh, so you do insurance, I'm like, no.
3
00:00:06,001 --> 00:00:09,000
Anything information security, State Farm is probably doing.
4
00:00:09,001 --> 00:00:13,000
Welcome. Welcome. Welcome to Information Security.
5
00:00:14,001 --> 00:00:18,000
I chose State Farm because of the opportunities available and the culture.
6
00:00:18,001 --> 00:00:21,000
I didn't know State Farm was a massive tech company.
7
00:00:21,001 --> 00:00:23,000
It is a great atmosphere, great culture here.
8
00:00:23,001 --> 00:00:25,000
It is a great place to learn.
9
00:00:25,001 --> 00:00:27,000
The main goal of Information Security
10
00:00:27,001 --> 00:00:31,000
is just to make sure that customers' data and our information is safe.
11
00:00:31,001 --> 00:00:35,000
There's numerous projects to work on in every which area
12
00:00:35,001 --> 00:00:36,000
and any language that you want to work on.
13
00:00:36,001 --> 00:00:41,000
Everything from data protection, access control, to the public cloud.
14
00:00:41,001 --> 00:00:44,000
The big push right now is automation.
15
00:00:44,001 --> 00:00:47,000
We have teams to look at encryption techniques.
16
00:00:47,001 --> 00:00:50,000
We have teams to protect data in transit.
17
00:00:50,001 --> 00:00:54,000
There's a whole bunch of programming need in Information Security,
18
00:00:54,001 --> 00:00:58,000
but beyond the programming there's database encryption,
19
00:00:58,001 --> 00:01:01,000
vulnerability space that does vulnerability scans, infrastructure.
20
00:01:01,001 --> 00:01:04,000
There's so many different options that you wouldn't even think about.
21
00:01:04,001 --> 00:01:08,000
Info Sec has a massive push for learning.
22
00:01:08,001 --> 00:01:12,000
We're always trying to evolve, teach our people newer skills.
23
00:01:12,001 --> 00:01:15,000
It's giving me leadership skills And communication skills.
24
00:01:15,001 --> 00:01:19,000
I think that's what sets State Farm apart. They spend a lot of time and resources
25
00:01:19,001 --> 00:01:23,000
on giving State Farm employees the ability to learn, grow, adapt.
26
00:01:23,001 --> 00:01:27,000
We've been using new technology that I've never touched before in the previous year.
27
00:01:27,001 --> 00:01:30,000
We are constantly evolving and learning new threats
28
00:01:30,001 --> 00:01:33,000
and ways to mitigate the future hackers of tomorrow.
29
00:01:33,001 --> 00:01:37,000
I'm really excited to continue to learn, and just keep building my acumen
30
00:01:37,001 --> 00:01:41,000
of Information Security, so I can help protect State Farm better.
31
00:01:41,001 --> 00:01:44,000
I feel like a trusted advisor for my entire team.
32
00:01:44,001 --> 00:01:47,000
My team looks to me for answers, I look to my team for answers.
33
00:01:47,001 --> 00:01:50,000
So, it's a very collaborative space. No one is at it alone.
34
00:01:50,001 --> 00:01:54,000
What excites me the most about my job is just all the people that work here.
35
00:01:54,001 --> 00:01:56,000
They really care about you personally.
36
00:01:56,001 --> 00:02:00,000
Having that community connection in such a large company
37
00:02:00,001 --> 00:02:03,000
is actually astonishing. I did not expect that whatsoever.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:07,000
State Farm uses drones? State Farm uses cloud technology and blockchain?
2
00:00:07,005 --> 00:00:09,000
We’re really not your dad’s insurance company
3
00:00:09,005 --> 00:00:13,000
Welcome. Welcome. Welcome to Red Labs.
4
00:00:13,005 --> 00:00:19,000
The goal in Red Labs is to go out and figure out new ways to engage with customers.
5
00:00:19,005 --> 00:00:25,000
It’s built around a passion for this idea and how we can take something
6
00:00:25,005 --> 00:00:31,000
that started on a whiteboard and bring that all the way to the customer.
7
00:00:31,005 --> 00:00:34,000
There’s many days you don't remember you’re working in an insurance company.
8
00:00:34,005 --> 00:00:36,000
I probably in a million years never would have thought
9
00:00:36,005 --> 00:00:40,000
that my career would have taken me to be a drone pilot for State Farm.
10
00:00:40,005 --> 00:00:45,000
What I do is go out and meet with startups, learn about what makes their product unique
11
00:00:45,005 --> 00:00:49,000
and then evaluating whether it would be a great fit for State Farm.
12
00:00:49,005 --> 00:00:54,000
We work in a lot of new and upcoming spaces, whether it’s virtual reality or artificial intelligence.
13
00:00:54,005 --> 00:00:57,000
We’re using a lot of cloud-based computing.
14
00:00:57,005 --> 00:01:02,000
We do a lot of mob programming, we do a lot of code reviews, we do a lot of games.
15
00:01:03,005 --> 00:01:06,000
We’re agile, we’re fail fast.
16
00:01:06,005 --> 00:01:10,000
We take great pride in how we help our customers recover from the unexpected.
17
00:01:10,005 --> 00:01:15,000
We’re looking for new, better, more efficient ways to make their lives easier and better.
18
00:01:15,005 --> 00:01:20,000
To meet those customer needs, we really have to be creative, we have to be innovative.
19
00:01:20,005 --> 00:01:25,000
So we have data analysts, data scientists, we have software developers, drone pilots.
20
00:01:25,005 --> 00:01:31,000
We have business analysts, tech analysts. What skillset do you need to work in our department? Almost any.
21
00:01:31,005 --> 00:01:36,000
There’s so many opportunities for those who are creative, who have ideas, who want to do things differently.
22
00:01:36,005 --> 00:01:41,000
It’s a place you want to work in because you’re going to learn, you’re going to grow, you’re going to discover.
23
00:01:41,005 --> 00:01:44,000
I’m excited to see what comes down the road next
24
00:01:44,005 --> 00:01:47,000
that could be my next new opportunity to try something that I don’t even know exists yet.
25
00:01:47,005 --> 00:01:51,000
To know that everything that we do is there for helping people.
26
00:01:51,005 --> 00:01:54,000
I think in a lot of situations, this department is ahead of the curve.
27
00:01:54,005 --> 00:01:58,000
It’s been really the highlight of my career, honestly.
28
00:01:58,005 --> 00:02:01,000
And the opportunity is just phenomenal, to be able to spread your wings.
What It’s Like | Technology and UX – Atlanta
Montage of beauty shots of Atlanta, Atlanta hub exteriors ending with Tarus walking into the building.
GRAFX: What It’s Like: State Farm Enterprise Technology - Atlanta
GRAFX: Tarus - UX Architect
Tarus: I gravitated towards the industry because I have a found love for software going through school, we started with understanding interactive design, how animation worked. From there took brief classes on software engineering and I kind of start putting all of that together. So, when I got the job at State Farm, it was mainly about enhancing the customer experience, bringing my love for animation, bringing my love for software and bringing my love for interactive design all in one roof.
GRAFX: Liz - UX Designer
Elizabeth: So, I’ve been with State Farm for about a year now and before coming here I actually went into my undergrad as a fine arts major, and then got more involved in design. Then from there I realized that a lot of the more interesting work was in the interaction and not just the visual design, but going into how does someone actually interact with the technology.
GRAFX: Nick - UX Generalist
Nick: I discovered the digital media master’s degree at Georgia Tech. And so I decided to try it out. And I learned about UX and a career option there. And so one of the companies that recruited me first was State Farm.
GRAFX: We use leading-edge technologies to simplify and strengthen human connections.
Tarus: So from the outside looking in, I think customers or anyone in the industry would think that we’re not technology-driven or have a User Experience department, but we do.
Nick: We’re in charge of thinking through basically from beginning to end of that customer’s experience with our digital products. What is their experience looking like, feeling like and how is it built.
Elizabeth: I’ll work with a content strategist and an architect, usually to come together and figure out what is the information that the customer needs to see, and how do we display it in a way that they can understand it easily, and get to what they want to do, quicker.
GRAFX: In Atlanta, State Farm is specifically looking for software developers, infrastructure analysts, and data analysts.
Nick: Obviously at State Farm the agents are a huge asset to what we do. So our job is to take the best aspects of what the agent offers and be able to provide that in a digital realm.
Tarus: I think the number one quality someone needs is flexibility. So if your team member gave a suggestion, we usually go with the phrase, “yes, and” So what can you add onto what they just said and adapt to it and make sure that everyone’s vision is heard.
Elizabeth: Everyone really cares about the product and what we’re putting out there. And so, it gets into a lot of intense conversations and deep conversations, but you also always end up learning. So I really enjoy it -- we have fun around here.
Tarus: We have rooms where there’s more collaborative. That way you, UX practitioners, could go in and craft out their ideas.
GRAFX: Our Atlanta, Park Center complex accommodates 7,500 associates and offers a great atmosphere to work, live, and play. The workspace is very collaborative.
Liz: I love the design of our floor. It’s very open.
Nick: We’ve got a lot of really cool stuff going on. I really enjoy working in that really forward-thinking environment.
Liz: I know we are moving forward and so that’s an exciting thing.
GRAFX: Join our community of good neighbors.

What It’s Like | Technology and UX – Bloomington
Graphic: What It’s Like: State Farm Enterprise Technology Bloomington, IL
Liz: I grew up in Bloomington and then I went to college in South Carolina and then moved back home and started working here, honestly I didn’t know that Risk and Compliance was where I was going to end up. But it’s been such a good experience and so many things that I’ve learned since I’ve been here.
Rich: When I started I was hired in as a programmer in data processing. And I was taught PL1, an initial programmer education program. I started myself, working online with, early on with HTML and Java script and all sorts of different languages like that. So, yeah, it’s gone from literally working on cards to working interactively with the web.
Runa: I was doing consulting before I came to State Farm it was lot of traveling. It was fun, but it was getting tiring. So I felt like it was time to put roots down somewhere and one of the State Farm recruiters reached out to me. I'm a software developer with a technical architecture skill set. I work with developers and kind of bridge the gap between business and technology.
Graphic: We are early adopters, fueled by the perpetual challenge of change.
Liz: I work primarily in the IT Security space, which is really, really important for our customers to make sure that were securing their data properly.
Rich: The difference between us and almost any other company out there, except the U.S. government is the size of data that we use. We do a very good job handling tremendous amounts of data and handling it very efficiently. And that’s something that you are not going to get anywhere else.
Graphic: We use leading-edge technologies to simplify and strengthen connections with our customers.
Runa: Each line of business has its own technology section where they have architects, solution developers, they have designers and then they have business involvement as well. And this is just the technology areas. So you can imagine there is Life, there is Auto, there is Mutual Funds, there is Health. There is Fire.
Liz: The benefit program here is great. Health insurance. The other benefits that they offer are awesome. Being a young mom I think it’s so important that they’re really family first.
Rich: My wife and I decided to stay in the Bloomington Normal area because it’s a great place to raise kids. It’s a wonderful school system, there’s a lot of activities, but yet it still also maintains the small town feel. Plus you’re literally half way between Chicago and St. Louis, so it makes for great opportunities to keep your kids engaged.
Graphic: Our Bloomington, Illinois complex is located in a great family-friendly community. Its two-hours from Chicago, Indianapolis, and St. Louis and is served by both Amtrak and a regional airport.
Liz: There’s so many opportunities here that I think if you want to, it’s a good place to start for these young folks, to be able to move around and I think there’s no limit to their growth at a company like this.
Graphic: Join our community of good neighbors.

GRAFX: What It’s Like: State Farm Enterprise Technology Dallas CityLine
Ishrat: I’ve been working in State Farm for close to four years now. I had been working as an e-commerce business analyst in Chicago. But then we decided to move to Dallas and I happened to see State Farm building go up like crazy, they were building so fast.
Angela: I just started three years ago. I’ve been in technology for the last 25 years. But this is the first time I’ve been actually a full-time employee, probably since I started my career.
Trey: Before State Farm I worked as a software developer at a few other companies for a number of years. We’ve been able to build close relationships and bounce ideas off of each other, and grow technically.
GRAFX: We use leading-edge technologies to simplify and strengthen human connections.
Ishrat: I work in State Farm as a product owner. So the product owner understands the business aspect, he’s, you know he or she is the voice of the customer. They understand what the customer needs and then take that and explain it to the developers and then help the developers come up with those enhancements to products then release it into the market.
Angela: The group that I work in we are the front line of State Farm. We deal with the agents and the customer. If they’re having issues with the app they’ll call in to a call center and then they route that traffic to us. And then we go in and troubleshoot and see what’s going on with the application and then make changes to it and fix it.
GRAFX: We are early adopters, fueled by the perpetual challenge of change. Trey: So just like at any other company that’s been around 96, 97 years we have a good deal of technical debt where applications sometimes they don’t work as well as they could. We have an opportunity now to come back and correct some of those things.
Ishrat: The work environment at State Farm is, if I could say it its work hard, play hard. That’s how we roll here, we have a beautiful building.
GRAFX: Our Dallas CityLine complex offers a great atmosphere in which to work, live, and play. It emphasizes a collaborative work environment.
Angela: Our management and their leadership style is very empowering. They give us guidance, but ultimately it’s up to the team to decide how we want to complete our work. When we work, we work hard. But it’s actually great to be a part of a team where you feel like the entire team has your back, if there’s something that’s going to fail you fail as a team or you succeed as a team. So it’s really great to have that family environment.
Ishrat: I think it’s very important to work with people who you get along with. And the culture here at State Farm is to take care of everyone. It comes from the higher management and that’s how everybody works, so it’s a really, it’s a good culture to work in.

GRAFX: Lower 1/3 Connor Intern Data Analyst
Connor: I’ve been doing Data Analyst work as an intern for the past year and I'll be going full-time as a Data Analyst. After some interviews, I got to the internship. And then in the internship I was really convinced that I want to be here full-time.
GRAFX: Lower 1/3 Katie Infrastructure Analyst
Katie: Prior to being with State Farm I was a student at Arizona State University and working in customer service. I really was targeting the big tech companies out here given my Computer Information Systems degree.
GRAFX: Lower 1/3 Toya Infrastructure Analyst
Toya: I started with State Farm in 2005 as a consultant on the storage team. The storage team manages State Farm data. We basically provide the technical foundation for our business partners through data analytics.
GRAFX over a plane that’s 70-80% of the horizontal video frame: We use leading-edge technologies to simplify and strengthen connections with our customers.
Connor: So, in my role I’ve worked on tooling for Architecture. And now I’m shifting my work more to focusing on our IT product health developing analytics, and then presenting those results.
Katie: My team is focused on enabling State Farm's first public cloud platform to increase our business agility, infrastructure efficiency, those types of things.
GRAFX over a plane that’s 70-80% of the horizontal video frame: We are early adopters, fueled by the perpetual challenge of change.
